Why Companies Drug Test

drug testingMany companies are conducting drug tests of their employees and potential employees. Drug testing programs are administered by employers for both economic and safety reasons. Some businesses may have their own reasoning or policies in place, but here are common reasons drug testing employees is a requirement:

Safety
Likely a main reason for employee drug testing is workplace safety. Employers want to ensure the safety of themselves, their employees, and their customers. Workers who are on drugs present an obvious risk to challenge this. Organizations requiring their employees to operate machinery or do manual labor, drug testing is likely required for the safety of everyone involved.

Public Relations
Organizations show their integrity to the public by requiring drug testing. By having a drug-free workplace, the organization may be more likely to seem professional and competent. It also helps to gain trust with current and future customers.

Benefits
In most cases, employee drug testing is related to compensation plans. Most states have laws denying unemployment compensation if employees are in violation of the workplace’s drug policies. Many health insurance providers offer group discounts for those employers who administer drug testing, therefore significantly reducing the costs of benefit programs provided by these employers.

Prevention & Rehabilitation
It makes sense that an employee or future employee will less likely take part in illegal drug use or apply elsewhere if drug testing is a requirement. If someone is using drugs, it forces them to face their problem and in this case drug testing can be constructive.
