What does a 5-panel drug test include?

Ever heard about a 5-panel drug test? Sure you have. Know what’s in it? Sure you don’t. A “drug test” has become one of those common things talked about but often misunderstood. It’s sort of like movie quotes from Top Gun or Back to the Future. If you grew up in the late 80’s or early 90’s – you might be clueless when it comes to movie quotes from such iconic movies; but you play along anyway. Sort of like you play along when someone says they’re going in for a drug test, or even a 5-panel, and you act like you know what it means.

What does a 5-panel drug test look for?

So – to save you from the embarrassment, here’s a quick guide on understanding the 5-panel drug test. It’s typically performed via a urine sample and tests for the following drugs:

  • cocaine
  • amphetamines (speed)
  • methamphetamines (meth)
  • tetrahydrocannabinol (marijuana)
  • methadone (often used to wean individuals off heroine/opiates)

These five drugs have typically been the “heavy hitters” and are what people look for during drug use.

Testing for Other Drugs

It’s important to note that there are also 10-panel drug tests (to be discussed next) that can be used to detect other substances in the blood stream. Also, there are new synthetic drug tests used to detect the use of bath salts such as fake pot. A standard 5-panel drug test WILL NOT indicate if any other substances have been used other than those listed above.

So there you have it – you know what a 5-panel drug test involves. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post, we’ll clue you into a 10-panel drug test.
